Oliver Robinson: From Prisoner to Key Witness
Disgraced ex-Alabama State Representative Oliver Robinson was released from federal prison one week ago today due to concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to al.com. Robinson was given over $360,000 in bribes in a criminal scheme born in the offices of Balch & Bingham to suppress African-Americans in North Birmingham from having their toxic property tested by the EPA. Robinson had been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison. Ex-Drummond Executive David Roberson and ex-Balch & Bingham partner Joel I. Gilbert have also been sentenced to federal prison although their cases are currently on appeal. Returning to home confinement, Robinson…

U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town Under Scrutiny for Ties to Alabama Power and Balch
[Update: July 10, 2020: Town has abruptly resigned. CDLU sparked probe forces resignation of disgraced U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town.] During the pandemic quarantine, we, the CDLU, received a letter from the U.S. Department of Justice dated April 7, 2020 confirming that the Office of the Inspector General had reviewed our formal complaint from December against the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama Jay E. Town, and had forwarded the matter to the Office of Professional Responsibility and the General Counsel of the Executive Office of the United States Attorneys. Providing the Department of Justice with hard copies…

Balch’s Alleged Elderly Abuse and Exploitation; FBI Silent
Exploitation: The expenditure, diminution, or use of the property, assets, or resources of a protected person without the express voluntary consent of that person or his or her legally authorized representative… A bombshell story on Alabama Today last Friday is rocking the legal and law enforcement community in Birmingham, Alabama. A Balch & Bingham attorney, Amy Adams, (pictured above, left) was allegedly involved in a scheme that appears to be elderly abuse and exploitation while the FBI and U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town (pictured above, center) have done nothing to investigate. The target of this alleged scheme: 88 year-old Joann…

Justice and Inherent Goodness Shall Prevail
With the despicable hunting and murder of Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, the spotlight on racism, corruption, favoritism, dirty cops, inert prosecutors, and Southern transgressions is erupting. Just like the idiots who attempt to justify the murder of Maud because he entered a construction site for a few minutes, we have seen idiots in Alabama attempt to justify the alleged targeting of poor blacks in toxic, polluted North Birmingham as a fight against “government overreach.” How about the alleged horrific use of a well-connected cop to arrest Burt Newsome? Balch & Bingham declared in court documents it had the “right to…

The Walking Dead: Trump Kills Balch’s “Comeback” Zombie
President Donald Trump has had enough of the filthy swamp of Alabama. In an unprecedented, earth-shattering move, the President endorsed the opponent of Balch & Bingham’s stooge Jeff Sessions, who is running for his old seat in the U.S. Senate. Sessions was the symbolic figurehead of the resurgence, the “comeback” zombie of Balch & Bingham and their Siamese twin Alabama Power, who had hoped to once again walk among the most powerful. Now Sessions and his cronies are among the walking dead. Once at the pinnacle of power, Balch appears to be in the deepest, darkest bowels of disgrace. Anything…

The Next David Roberson? Southern Company Sell-Off Begins
David Roberson, the “fall guy” for the North Birmingham Bribery Scandal, was well-respected and beloved in Alabama’s highest circles until he was allegedly betrayed by his “friends” at Balch & Bingham and co-workers at Drummond Company. Balch & Bingham, who has declared in court filings that they “owed no duty” to Roberson, not even to tell him the truth, has been stung for their arrogance and battered reputation. The corrupt scheme of targeting poor black children and allegedly bribing their parents with $50 gift cards from Burlington Coat Factory was born at the offices of Balch & Bingham. In the…

Three Hour Hearing and Setback for Balch Stooges
Yesterday afternoon, Balch & Bingham stooges Trey Glenn and Scott Phillips had a three hour court hearing in their criminal trial for ethics violations related to the North Birmingham Bribery Scandal. And you won’t believe who was seated in the court gallery: Alabama Power’s criminal attorney. After all the acrobatic and sensational circus antics had cleared, Judge Stephen C. Wallace signed an order calling on prosecutors to give more specific details on each of the criminal charges. Prosecutors will not have a problem complying with the order, insiders tell us, and the work product from the order will strongly demonstrate…

U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town’s Alleged Dirty Work for Balch Exposed
In Alabama, there is no such thing as a coincidence. As observers we cannot believe the sheer stupidity of operatives who work for or are associated with the alleged unsavory conduct of Balch & Bingham or Balch’s sister-wife Alabama Power. Some of these goons think they are above the law, never to be caught or reprimanded. And the explosive, jaw-dropping photographs of U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town chugging down drinks with Alabama Power Chairman and CEO Mark A. Crosswhite, a former Balch partner, confirms a dubious relationship and affirms the belief that Town’s integrity is lacking. Now Balch’s alleged Tour…

Unindicted Masterminds? Alabama Power Briefed Regularly
The tiny environmental group GASP, the alleged intended target of the “brilliant” North Birmingham bribery scheme, is digging into the federal criminal trial evidence from 2018 meticulously. And what have they found? More evidence that appears to show that Alabama Power was being regularly briefed about the scheme. Unindicted co-conspirators or unindicted masterminds? In an email from July 2015, Balch-made millionaire Joel I. Gilbert tells his Balch colleague Steven McKinney to forward the “dues invoice” to Alabama Power’s point person, Matt Bowden, writing “we need to probably update him soon on new developments.” Is it no wonder that now, today…

Blue Origin: Balch & Bingham’s Biggest Loss
[This post was published a year ago on February 7, 2019. Now with $25.2 billion budgeted for NASA and a piece of the pie being allocated to Blue Origin, Balch & Bingham’s Birmingham baggage appears to have truly caused a horrific loss.] The headlines in late January were a kick in the stomach: Blue Origin broke ground on a $200 million facility to build rockets in Huntsville, Alabama. Once a top Balch & Bingham D.C. lobbying client, Blue Origin bailed on Balch & Bingham in 2017 days after the indictment was handed down against then-Balch partner Joel I. Gilbert. We…

Town and Crosswhite Mocked and Humiliated
Members of the U.S. Department of Justice are in disbelief. U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town, we are told, is rattled and in disbelief. The photos are beyond humiliating! Mocked inside the Beltway, Mountain Brook, and on Goat Hill, now comes the satirical cartoon showing how corruption is about to swallow Town and Crosswhite. And the satire does raise two serious questions: Why was Alabama Power allegedly shielded and “unmentionable” during the North Birmingham corruption trial? Why was Jeffrey Bowers, the cop son of Alabama Power retired executive Willard L. Bowers, never investigated for the alleged abuse of the color of…

Fallout: Crosswhite Out as Chair of Business Council of Alabama
Last Tuesday, insiders at the Business Council of Alabama (BCA) gave us a heads up that something was going to happen after the jaw-dropping photographs of Alabama Power CEO Mark Crosswhite and U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town surfaced showing them having drinks at the Moon Shine Lounge. As another observer told us vulgarly about the bombshell photographs: “No f***ing caption needed.” On Thursday, Mark A. Crosswhite was replaced as Chair of the powerful business group after only having served as chair since late 2018. The group went through turmoil in the summer of 2018 when Crosswhite successfully spearheaded the move…

Jaw-Dropping Photos: Mark A. Crosswhite’s Meeting with U.S. Attorney Rocks Alabama Power
Stuffed in an unmarked, unlabeled manila envelope, several 8 X 10 photos appear to confirm what ex-Drummond Company Executive and “fall guy” David Roberson has repeatedly declared: Before Roberson was indicted, his friend Mike Cole had told Roberson that Cole and Alabama Power’s CEO Mark A. Crosswhite had a meeting with the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, Jay E. Town. Crosswhite was attempting to allegedly quash the prosecution of anyone who had been accused of bribing disgraced politician Oliver Robinson. Town allegedly replied that he was confirmed too late to kill the North Birmingham Bribery prosecution and…

Happy New Year! Balch & Bingham Dumped
What a terrible way to start 2020. Balch & Bingham, which tried to rehabilitate their Washington D.C. lobbying practice last November, saw two lobbying clients dump the firm in recent days. According to a January 9th report in Politico.com, Northern Star Generation, one of two major clients left in D.C., terminated the firm. The writing was on the wall. We reported in September that “Northern Star Generation has paid Balch only $30,000 [in 2019], compared to $160,000 [in 2018].” We, the CDLU, had reached out to the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), a joint owner of Northern Star Generation, calling…

Untouchable?Crosswhite’s Alleged Secret Deal, Secret Meeting
We learned recently that many of the emails that convicted felon and Balch-made millionaire Joel I. Gilbert wrote giving updates on the bribery/AstroTurf scheme in North Birmingham were sent to Alabama Power executives. David Roberson, who was convicted of participating in the bribery scheme, was simply cc’d. (See the exhibit from the criminal trial below.) So was Balch & Bingham’s siamese twin, sister-wife Alabama Power really calling the shots as a major backer of the money laundering entity Alliance for Jobs and the Economy (AJE)? What would be the motive for Alabama Power to be allegedly involved in this corrupt…
