North Birmingham Bribery Case,  Spotlight on Balch & Bingham

Sentencing of Balch-Made Millionaire Tomorrow

[Update: Gilbert was sentenced to 60 months. Read more by clicking here.]

While federal prosecutors seek an 8-year prison term for convicted felon Joel I. Gilbert, lawyers for Gilbert are asking for a one-year plus one-day prison sentence, 6 months of that as home detention, according to Kyle Whitmire of AL.com.

Showing the same smug arrogance as before, during, and now after the trial, Gilbert and his defenders won’t even apologize for the criminal conduct that suppressed African-Americans in North Birmingham from having their toxic property tested by the EPA.

In fact, his defenders are still running a pathetic “Get the Facts” campaign as of this morning on Google search justifying the criminal conduct as a response to the EPA.

Balch & Bingham refuses to apologize for the conduct of this Balch-made millionaire who was on the payroll until the moment he was convicted, including the targeting of poor black children with free coat drives.

The only bright news in this sentencing is federal prosecutors are also seeking 250 hours of community service in North Birmingham each year for three years after Gilbert is released from prison, according to Jon Paespcke of WVTM13.

With cooperating federal witness and paid-and-bought-for politician Oliver Robinson handed a 33 month prison sentence, we believe the judge should hand Gilbert not only the suggested 8-year prison sentence, but should add an additional one-year, and one-day to that recommendation for Gilbert’s apparent lack of contrition or remorse.
